Coaching soccer
THE GRATIFICATION OF BEING A SOCCER COACH
We have all heard of soccer moms, well, why it is when it comes to soccer everyone wants to stand on the sideline and shout out input but very few want to step up and actually take on the role of coach. Coaching soccer is a worthwhile and beneficial experience for anyone willing to put their heart into it and take a chance.
The Benefits of Coaching Soccer:
1) If it is your own children you are coaching, the obvious benefits is being able to spend quality time with your children, watching them grow and work on new skills, and just being a part of the learning and fun. Also if you are coaching your own children it will set the tone and put yourself in a position for them to view you as their hero.
2) Perhaps you have always had a love for the game. This is your chance to improve or develop skills in soccer. If you enjoy soccer you will develop a passion for coaching and that it self will fill you with rewards.
3) Coaching young people provides you the opportunity to be influential not only in their life but also within the community. Ask any professional athlete about coaches they had when they were youngsters, chances are they will tell you about one that influenced them greatly and perhaps even credit him with where they are today. What I am saying is you will be well remembered and highly respected; undoubtedly you are going to make a difference in someone’s life.
4) It isn’t just the kids you coach that will benefit, think of what this can do for you. This has the possibility to enhance some aspect of your personal or professional life. The kids you coach have parents; the parents have lives away from the soccer field. This could be a way to meet new business contacts. Perhaps on a more personal level, say you are running a little low on self esteem. The responsibility and leadership that you provide has its own rewards, in addition to the admiration you will receive from the team.
5) It may sound a little cheesy but consider how it will look on a resume to prospective employers. Volunteerism promotes someone as a committed reliable individual to prospective employers.
You are unsure of how to get involved. Call the park and recreation department in your community. Show up at a soccer field, introduce yourself to the coach ask him how to get involved. Maybe get your feet wet by assisting an existing coach, becoming a team or equipment manager. It may be beneficial to pick up some books at the library or check out a local bookstore for books and/or videos.
This is your chance to get up off that couch and Get a Life! Giving to the children in your community, even if you have none yourself will enrich your life and you are sure to touch the lives of others. So what are you waiting for? Get out there and start coaching! The sooner you start the sooner you can make a difference.
