Customer Review: RETURNED! Scary & hurts like heck!
Purchased it this afternoon, took it home & was SO excited to use it! I have been growing out my underarm hair for weeks-just waiting for this day to come. I read the instructions (keep at 90 degree angle) and plugged it in. The first thing I felt was a tiny pinch, the hair being pulled out obviously. Then, everything after that was the most horrendous pain I have ever felt! I have given BIRTH, had over four tattoo’s, waxed, shaved, threaded-you name it! THIS, by far, was the WORST pain I have ever felt! I tried it in every darn direction and it SNAGGED my skin and ripped it to shreds! Both of my underarms are red and tender from where the skin got torn off and it’s been 8 hours already (it’s 11 pm and I did it at 3 pm). Other bad things: Noisy as hell, the two settings, Soft and Something Faster should have been labeled Super Fast and Something even Super Faster! The Soft setting was so fast I was AFRAID to put it to my armpit! It’s like this scary weedwhacker! The massaging rollers did nothing at all. I am giving it TWO stars because it DID get 95% of my hair out by the roots (all over the place), the color is cute…and thats about it. I can see how this would pay for itself after one or two sessions-but imo, the pain was NOT worth it! I am going to stick with sugar waxing & shaving thank you.

Customer Review: Yes, it hurts but “no pain, no gain” right?
I got my epilator yesterday and used it for the first time this morning. I’m not going to lie to you…it hurt! The first few passes on my legs had me holding my breath and breaking out in a sweat. But as the remaining hairs became more sparse, the discomfort reached a much more manageable level. I truly believe that future uses will prove less painful or even painless, especially if the product is used regularly to pluck out hairs as they come in. I even got up the nerve to do my underarms and bikini area! All areas are a bit red right now (I just finished) but not a whole lot worse in the bikini area than after I shave, so I am positive it will clear up shortly. The best part…my legs are wonderfully smooth and should stay that way for a lot longer than if I had shaved them. It makes a little pain worth it in my book!

As for those who think that this epilator is simply breaking off the hairs, I know for a fact that this is not the case. The hairs I found on the ground and in the machine were at least twice as long as the growth on my legs, indicating without a doubt that they were pulled by the root.

So after my very first use (and a fair amount of pain) I am still going to recommend this product! I look forward to being “shave free” and yet smooth and glorious all summer long.

Customer Review: Review of the movie “Gracie”.
I thought the movie “Gracie” was excellent. The movie showed how dreams in a person can inspire one to triumph over outside walls. It was truly an inspirational movie which anyone would enjoy. Carly Schroeder was excellent in the movie. Having read an interview about her, it was easy to understand why she made this movie. We need more movies like this to portray good positive images!
Customer Review: Not soooo good.
Not exactly for the whole family. There are a couple of inappropriate scenes for younger children. The language is not that great either. The acting is fine and the story is good. I did think it was a bit much that none of the adult men took up for the girl when she was punched. No male would have took that from someone else but she was expected to because she was asking for it because she wanted to play with the boys!!?? It is an okay movie.

Black & Decker AAW100 8-Inch Auto Wrench Adjusting Wrench

Black & Decker AAW100 8-Inch Auto Wrench Adjusting Wrench
Manually adjusting a wrench to fit particular nuts and bolts can be a real hassle, especially in tight spaces. Enter Black & Decker’s battery-powered Auto Wrench, a phenomenally handy tool that opens and closes with the push of a button. Boasting 220 foot-pounds of torque, this wrench is powerful enough to handle most household tasks, from car repair to fixing leaks.

The Auto Wrench is not meant to replace specialty tools like pipe or torque wrenches, but the jaws open wide enough (up to 1-1/4-inch) so that it could conceivably replace a range of manual wrenches sitting in your toolkit. This is an ideal product for someone looking to buy a wrench that’s both easy to use and versatile. At 8-inches, you could toss it in the silverware drawer and whip it out when you need it.

The area where this wrench really shines is in hard-to-reach spots where mobility is obscured, such as under sinks. A typical situation where the Auto Wrench would help might be one in which you’re awkwardly reaching for a nut underneath the kitchen faucet. With a comparable manual wrench, it’s conceivable you would fumble around with the adjusting mechanism for minutes on end, and then toss a fit. With the Auto Wrench, you’d simply press a button (positioned where you rest your thumb) and the jaws would open or close to your specifications.

We were a bit skeptical when we learned the Auto Wrench takes AA batteries and doesn’t include a rechargeable battery. This means you’ll need to keep some extra batteries around the house - or buy some rechargeable batteries — if you use it frequently. However, the wrench isn’t a power hog by any means. Black & Decker says you can get 650 cycles out of two AA batteries, which should be plenty for most people.

Customer Review: An amazing wrench
I was surprised at some of the negative comments about this wrench. First of all, it seems to me to be as effective as the equivalent manually adjustable “crescent” wrench — with the emphasis on adjustable. There are some rare times when an adjustable wrench won’t do and an exactly size open end wrench from a set of wrenches may be necessary. In those cases, this wrench won’t do the trick any more than a manually adjustable crescent wrench will.

But lets talk of the 97.98% of cases where an adjustable open-end wrench is just what is wanted and needed. Here’s one that adds something useful — it adjusts wider and narrower at the touch of a button. Well, a spring-loaded momentary-on rocker switch, actually. Convenient for your thumb — doesn’t matter whether you’re right-handed or left-handed — there’s this rocker switch. Press one end of the switch and the wrench width opens up. Press the other end and it closes up. It doesn’t take much practice to get the hang of it, and in an instant you can resize the wrench to fit your application.

My first use the other day involved replacing the fill-valve inside my toilet tank. Where I needed a wrench was to loosen the supply tube’s hex nut — you know the one, it holds the bottom end of the water supply tube to the shut-off valve that comes out of the wall below the tank. I also needed it to tighten the same nut when I installed the new tube. It did the job admirably. Yes, my old manually adjustable crescent wrench would have worked, but that takes a bit more effort to get the wrench jaws to the right diameter. With this battery-operated wrench, the adjustment was performed in an instant with the push of the rocker switch with my thumb, and without trial and error.

I’ll be using this wrench a lot in the future, no doubt about it.

Yes, the grip is a bit bulkier because of the rubber coated battery compartment that forms the grip on the handle, and the handle is a bit wider than a manually adjustable wrench. But it was actually more comfortable for me, perhaps because I have fairly large hands. (I suspect that people with small hands might find a manually adjustable wrench with a slimmer handle better for them.)

Anyway, the other thing is, this is a fun wrench to use, too, a nice toy for people who do handy things. Well worth the $24 and change, I find.

Customer Review: Nice idea, not a durable tool.
Got one for Christmas, used it for one project, installing gas lines in the basement. Wrench fell off the ladder and that was it, no more auto wrench.

The good part, returned this to a B&D store, they sent me 3 wrenches as a replacment.

I’ll be more careful with the replacements, but, this is not a regular tool, have to be careful with it.

I would not have bought this myself, nothing beats a good Craftsman open end wrench. I’ll find a use for it.

Customer Review: Stallone in Victory
I am a Stallone fan, but I hated his character in this movie. He plays a bit of a jerk — well. Still, this is a fantastic movie in virtue of the story line. It was inexpensive to own and well worth the money I paid. I will rewatch this one occassionally.
Customer Review: Good, entertaining story
Until reading the reviews here, I thought this movie was British. Why the assumption?, because it’s not the usual American jingoism. As such, I found it very entertaining, interesting, and yes, mostly believable. It was also surprising in that it was a good movie, outside of Rocky, with Stallone in it. I doubt this movie deserves to be described as a classic, yet it is certainly up there for its entertainment value.

Customer Review: great game
i would definitely suggest this game if you are a fan of soccer. the only negative i would bring up is the fact that there is a feature that will automatically switch to a player that is closer to the opposing teams player with the ball. its a great idea but it can be annoying when you are moving one way with a player towards the guy with the ball and suddenly it changes to someone else and your going the wrong way because it switched. luckily it can be turned off. the only flaw i have found in the game is that the comments made by the announcers don’t always correspond with what actually happens or it is said after the fact.

Brain Rules: 12 Principles for Surviving and Thriving at Work, Home, and School (Book & DVD)

Brain Rules: 12 Principles for Surviving and Thriving at Work, Home, and School (Book & DVD)
Most of us have no idea what’s really going on inside our heads. Yet brain scientists have uncovered details every business leader, parent, and teacher should know–such as the brain’s need for physical activity to work at its best.

How do we learn? What exactly do sleep and stress do to our brains? Why is multi-tasking a myth? Why is it so easy to forget–and so important to repeat new information? Is it true that men and women have different brains?

In Brain Rules, molecular biologist Dr. John Medina shares his lifelong interest in how the brain sciences might influence the way we teach our children and the way we work. In each chapter, he describes a brain rule–what scientists know for sure about how our brains work–and then offers transformative ideas for our daily lives.

Medina’s fascinating stories and sense of humor breathe life into brain science. You’ll learn why Michael Jordan was no good at baseball. You’ll peer over a surgeon’s shoulder as he finds, to his surprise, that we have a Jennifer Aniston neuron. You’ll meet a boy who has an amazing memory for music but can’t tie his own shoes.

You will discover how:

- Every brain is wired differently
- Exercise improves cognition
- We are designed to never stop learning and exploring
- Memories are volatile
- Sleep is powerfully linked with the ability to learn
- Vision trumps all of the other senses
- Stress changes the way we learn

In the end, you’ll understand how your brain really works–and how to get the most out of it.

About the DVD The Brain Rules DVD, included with this book, is a lively tour of the 12 brain rules. You will experience firsthand Medina’s rare gift for making science fun, accessible, and relevant. The DVD will take your understanding of the book to the next level.

Customer Review: Amazing
Read this book. Entertaining, clear and you will learn a lot about how we work.

Customer Review: Fascinating book
I’m a teacher and have recently become interested in the brain. This book is GREAT for educators. It will make you rethink the way you teach. It made me realize how important some parts of the curriculum are (P.E.) which are often cut in order to make more room for review time. With all the non-sense high stakes tests of NCLB it’s not surprising (I did it myself) but if you want to boost your test scores, DON’T CUT P.E. I love this book and would recommend it to anybody, but especially teachers.

Customer Review: Perfect Soccer Bag
I purchased the Navy bag and it is a lot better than other duffel bags I have owned. The shoe compartment holds my cleats and flip flops with ease. The inside of the bag is lined to keep out moisture. The center compartment holds a mini ball, size 5 soccer ball, shin guards, water bottles, and all of my spring season clothes, which can be a lot depending on Colorado weather. This bag is great.
Customer Review: great sized bag! and cute!
I recently bought the adidas duffle bag in collegiate light blue. It is a wonderfully designed bag perfect for sleepovers, meets, games, camp, and more! There are lots of pockets in conveinant places, and a great size! I would recommend this bag to anyone, and I enjoy it very much!

Videocoach Vogelsinger’s Kicking (Soccer Series)
List Price: $12.98
Used Price: $6.48
Customer Review: Terrific Content: Old Tape
Soccer involves a patient acquisition of skills and cannot be short cut with a 5 second “here’s how you kick” segment. Vogelsinger carefully builds up and out from foot position at the moment of impact, through full volley kicks on all three surfaces of the foot. It is an excellent tape and has helped me with my teams and children, who all play at the club level. So what if the video quality is bad: the content is great
Customer Review: Compared to what?
Even if this were the only video of soccer moves I’d say avoid it. Fortunately, there are better tapes so I’d pass on this whole series unless you can get it at the library and even then prepare to use the fast fwd button a LOT. This has to be the weakest tape of the 6 tape series since there is no motivation or logic given behind anything shown - just ‘do this..like this..” and there are few if any close-ups of the foot in motion. Here’s a simple hint for anyone whose kicks are too low, bouncing along the grass and losing momentum. If your supporting foot is slightly behind the ball, the kicking foot will catch the ball on the upward part of its arc and give a little loft to the ball. I have never seen this explained in any video tape - someone at work pointed it out to me. All the boys on my U-10 team can now kick nice shots and understand this simple logic.

Kicking and Screaming
Will Ferrell is at his full, frenzied power as Phil Weston, a married, uncoordinated would-be sportsman with an uncoordinated would-be sportsman son–and an unresolved relationship with his coach father, Buck (Robert Duvall), who has very little tolerance for the uncoordinated. When Buck trades his own grandson to a real loser of a little league soccer team, Phil naturally takes over underdog coaching duties and the two men butt heads. You could easily, and perhaps rightfully, dismiss all of this as a dumb, demented Meatballs or Bad News Bears rip-off, but it’s pleasantly dumb and sometimes hysterically demented: Encouraged by his neighbor, ex-Chicago Bears coach Mike Ditka (yes, playing himself), Phil stops his vitamin regimen and becomes wildly addicted to regular doses of caffeine, which turns him into a monster of a team leader. In addition to Ferrell, Duvall does a doozy of a comic riff on his Great Santini role, and even Ditka is unexpectedly funny. It’s a formula film with just enough far-out notions to keep you chuckling. –Steve Wiecking

Customer Review: Nonstop laughs the whole family can enjoy…
I’m a huge fan of Will Ferrell and so I was excited when this movie was released. Although I never got a chance to see it in the theater I rushed to buy the DVD once it was released much to my wife’s dismay, since she doesn’t share the same love of Ferrell. The greatest thing about this film is that, while Ferrell may have to reign in some of the outlandish remarks that make him so funny in order to keep a lower rating and appeal to children and parents alike, he still maintains the same enthusiasm for his work and delivers a performance that is over the top, hilarious and spontaneous, and one that even my wife found enjoyable. That’s probably one of the most commendable traits here. It serves as a really great family sports comedy, appealing to children but also giving the parents something to laugh at. The film follows Phil Weston as he matches wits with his stubborn and overbearing father Buck. Buck, played by Robert Duvall, has always been disappointed with Phil who never shared his father’s love of sports and everything manly. Instead Phil grew up to run a vitamin store, something Buck is somewhat ashamed of. Throughout Phil’s life his father always had to be the best, even if that meant trampling his own son down in the process, and now, years later when Phil’s son Sammy gets the same treated from his dear old Grandpa, Phil has to take maters into his own hands. He does that by offering to coach the loser team Buck traded Sammy to. Buck is unsupportive but in the end it’s the competition between the two Weston men that finally bonds them like they’ve never been before. Will Ferrell shines here, with all the quarks and loud mouthed antics that make his more adult oriented fare so entertaining. As Phil ditches his vitamins for coffee he becomes loud, obnoxious and downright out of control and it all adds up to a great deal of fun. Duvall is also effective as Buck. He’s rude, mean and at times a downright tyrant. The first time I watched this movie his character actually made me angry. Mike Ditka is actually really funny as himself here. All the children are effective and funny in their own rights as well. The story is a sweet one at that, showing the importance of letting your children have fun and be themselves, of not adding undue pressure to their success and never allowing your own insecurities and self doubts to ruin your relationship with your child. It shows the good and bad side of competition and the dangers of taking things too far. But, in the end `Kicking and Screaming’ is just good old fun and is one that the whole family can enjoy together time and time again. I loved this movie (found it much more entertaining than the `Bad News Bears’ remake released around the same time) and highly recommend it. It may not be the best sports comedy out there, but what it lacks in originality it makes up in laughs.
Customer Review: Go Tigers
Will Ferrell What a Character, this movie is funny as hell. It’s just hillarious. I love will funny actor. And lets not forget a legend Robert Duvall wich made the movie even better. Those two have a good chemestrey and the way they compete with each othe in the movie is funny. all in all this movie was great.

Customer Review: Good Performance, Great Bounce.
I bought this for my cousins sons birthday. He is a proud student of the beautiful game. He can easily handle & control it better than the adult size regulation ball. It is made of high quality materials & was easy to inflate. After four months, he & his aspiring teamates have used it almost daily & it is still in fine condition. The bright colors have also made it easier to use for night practices.
Customer Review: a great youth soccer ball
I purchased this ball for my 3 year old, he seems to be able to handle/control this ball much better than a full size regulation ball. The ball appears to be made of quality materials and was easy to inflate and has kept its shape for a few weeks now without the need to re-inflate. I would buy this ball again.

Customer Review: Waste of money and time!
This is probably the worst soccer instructional DVD that I’ve ever seen (and I’ve watched quite a few). More time is spent on David talking about David than on instruction. Content is light and production is glitzy and distracting.
Customer Review: HIghly polished waste of time
Beckham is one of the great soccer players of today and I was really looking forward to his hints on how to do things, especially since this is a 2 DVD package. I was most interested in the “banana kick” which is how most people call the kick that bends the ball around say an opposing “wall.” Not here. Almost nothing is here except a lot of special effects, and “extras” like some shots of the face of the Great One looking worried as he gets ready to do a penalty kick. There is a little 20 minutes or so of a game of the Great One vs a bunch of young kids but nothing to learn there. The only saving grace of this is the points on “first touch” which are pretty good. There are a very few pointers for beginners on how to get past an opponent but nothing any 9 year old can’t figure out for him/herself. So much sizzle, so little steak!

I used it with my Sony Camera to capture pics and vids, results are outstanding… Pretty happy with price too.

Customer Review: great buy
strongly recomended buy because it includes a free adapter and let me tell you when i goto the retail photo shops like walgreens or walmart and ect.. some of those places are not usefull unless you have an adapter for the memory stick. i would say buy this because take a look at the sites of most electronics stores for this memory stick size and the adapter. and i can tell you that this is the cheapest way to get what you want and the delivery is faster then what is stated on the site. my product came in four days and it was amazing. so i would say buy this and you will not be disappointed. He’s become a member of the family and has helped her learn concepts beyond the milestones associated to her age. “Elmo Has Two” teaches a child about hands, ears and feet. All of the Elmo World DVDs are clever and entertaining and follow a repetitive format that a child becomes familiar with which helps with the learning process. My husband and I can actually sit and watch them too! In fact, we have entire Elmo’s World DVD collection.
Customer Review: ELMO’S WORLD IS A GREAT LEARNING EXPERIENCE
We have numerous Elmo’s World DVD and we find them to be a treat to watch (daughter 2). We watch them everyday after coming home from daycare. We say hi to Dorothy each time we see her. We get a kick out of Mr. Noodle and Mr. Noodle’s brother Mr. Noodle. We just love watching the children on the show, brush their teeth, get new clothes on and I especially enjoy watching when Elmo asks the baby. Elmo’s world is very education and plus for any child over 2. My daughter wants to brush her teeth, get her shoes on, get dressed and do everything that the kids and Elmo do on the show. My daughter perfers Elmo, Barney or the Wiggles to regular TV. Two thumbs up, ELMO!

Philips Sonicare Advance (A-Series) Replacement Brush Head, Standard

Philips Sonicare Advance (A-Series) Replacement Brush Head, Standard
Customer Review: excellent service
I am a newcomer to this service and I waited many days past the est day of arrival before I contacted someone about not receiving my toothbrushes. I got an immediate and very courteous response. In 2 days I had my toothbrushes!! I am as pleased with the service as I am with the merchandise!

Customer Review: Dentist recommended
Years ago my dentist recommended we get a Sonicare and we did and I was immediately impressed with the difference. These replacement brushes fit our unit perfectly and my only complaint is after every use you have to take off the plastic screw piece or mold will start growing due to the trapped water underneath. The brushes last approx. 6 months before obviously needing to be replaced (bristles start to splay out) and the subscription program is great as I don’t need to remember to order them they just arrive at my door! We purchased the smaller head ones for our toddlers who love using “mommy and daddy’s toothbrush!”

The Ball is Round: A Global History of Soccer
The definitive book about soccer. With a new foreword for the American edition.

There may be no cultural practice more global than soccer. Rites of birth and marriage are infinitely diverse, but the rules of soccer are universal. No world religion can match its geographical scope. The single greatest simultaneous human collective experience is the World Cup final.

In this extraordinary tour de force, David Goldblatt tells the full story of soccer’s rise from chaotic folk ritual to the world’s most popular sport-now poised to fully establish itself in the USA. Already celebrated internationally, The Ball Is Round illuminates soccer’s role in the political and social histories of modern societies, but never loses sight of the beauty, joy, and excitement of the game itself.

Questions for David Goldblatt

Amazon.com: There’s a sentence in the middle of The Ball Is Round that to me sums up a great deal of the culture of football. After noting that Pel? had scored nearly a goal a game in over 1,300 professional matches–the sort of stat that would be on every page in a history of one of the major American sports but that is very rare in this one–you write, “This of course tells us nothing about all the goals he made.” What stories do football fans tell about their sport and their stars?

Goldblatt: Well, in America not only would you be banging on about Pele’s goal to game ratio but you would have been collecting statistics in a rational organized manner about his assists–a concept that had only entered soccer statistics in the last few years. The state of Brazilian football statistics during Pel?’s career would not pass muster in Cooperstown in can tell you. Bill James would have a nervous breakdown with hopeless state of the data base. Soccer fans tell a lot the same stories that Americans tell themselves, sagas, epics, heroic tasks, near misses, dramatic comebacks, tales of curious individualists and unshakeable teams, but they are told in a the idioms, genres, vocabulary, and head space of hundreds of different cultures.

Amazon.com: I have to ask the inevitable question: why hasn’t football–rather, soccer–ever taken hold in the United States (despite generations now who grow up playing it)? (And does the rest of the world care if it ever does?) I was fascinated by your comment in the American foreword that you recovered from finishing the book by ignoring soccer for half a year and only watching American sports. What did you notice?

Goldblatt: Contrary to the received wisdom I would say that soccer has taken hold in the US, if we look at participation figures amongst women and the young, and while MLS isn’t about to challenge the premiership or Serie A for money or glamour it looks like it is now established on a firm footing. If the game can just tap into the rising Latino communities of America it could be pushing hockey for fourth sport.

That said it would still be just number 4. Baseball, football, and basketball have now had over a century’s head start on soccer and between them created a wider sports culture–of expectations, tastes, and pleasures–that I think sometimes finds soccer incomprehensible ( what’s with the draws?) or distasteful (all that diving). Soccer had its chance in the USA in the 1920s and 30s when East Coast professional leagues were drawing big crowds but a combination of bureaucratic infighting, the Wall Street crash, and the lingering ethnic associations of the game killed it for two generations.

My time with American sports, which I should add is far from over, wasn’t planned. After the 2006 World Cup I just couldn’t watch any more soccer and there was an awfully big space in my brain where that used to go on. Moneyball by Michael Lewis came into the void and that took me to Jules Tygiel and the great tradition of baseball histories, Ken Burns’s long documentary which enchanted me (watched the whole thing in two days) and by the time I had read Roger Angell and stopped laughing, discovered Jackie Robinson, DiMaggio’s Streak, and the Shot Heard Round the World it was time to subscribe to NASN and watch the last two months of the 2006 season. If you like the places where culture, society, sport, and history intersect then you’re going to like baseball. I’m still working on hockey, in fact I’m still working on seeing the puck, and I’m trying hard to understand football–but I’m finding the helmets, amongst other things, a problem.

What did I notice? Where do I begin? After barely thinking about the United States for three and half years the whole modern history of America opened up before me. That’s a work in progress.

Amazon.com: It’s hard to underestimate the density and breadth of knowledge that went into this book: politics, culture, and of course football, across the entire football-playing world (which is to say, the entire world). How did you research your vast topic?

Goldblatt: The Ball Is Round was, in retrospect, 20 years in the making. I had wanted to write a world history since I knew that such things existed. In a former life I spent a long time working on globalization and global history and then I made a global atlas of football, so I had plenty of background.

After that, I followed Phillip Pullman’s advice, “Read like a butterfly, write like a bee.” I read a lot, followed my nose and other’s advice, scoured journals, libraries and old magazines, studied web sites, visited museums, stadia, and shrines, made contacts in a lot of countries, and begged, bought, and traded information and opinion–oh and I watched an awful lot of football.

There were trips to Scotland, Sweden, Serbia, France, Germany, Italy, Austria, Greece, Tunisia, Uruguay, Brazil, and Argentina not to mention a lot of old games on video and DVD.

How did I write it? Fast.

Amazon.com: There is nearly as much politics in your history as football–among Argentines, for instance, Peron has nearly as many index entries as Maradona. Why did you not want to write a history only of the players and the games? What relationship do you see between football and politics?

Goldblatt: How could anyone write a history of just players and games and be true to the meaning of soccer? Milan Kundera defended the role of the literary critic by arguing “Without the meditative background that is criticism, works become isolated gestures, historical accidents, soon forgotten.” I would say the same of same of social history and sport. All sports trade on their histories, but tend to offer us at best the anodyne accounts of their own development and meanings at worst they are scurrilous cover-ups and concocted myth. Sport and its audience deserve better.

The relationship between football and politics takes many forms–it has been entwined with every conceivable political ideology and movement, every geographical unit and social division, and it has served authoritarian and democratic visions. In the end, football will take on and express the politics determined by our collective choices and struggles, the point for me is to remember that one has choices; to some extent we get the soccer we deserve.

Amazon.com: Has modern football become too big for itself, between the tycoons and the multinationals, the giant audiences and transfer fees, the corruption and the endless media coverage? Is there still space for the game?

Goldblatt: I went to see Manchester United last year in the Champions league–a 70th birthday present for my Mancunian father-in-law–and here at the epicenter of the global branding revolution and the foreign takeover and the rest of it I was privileged to see Carlos Tevez take the game by the scruff of the neck and force 21 players and 70,000 people to track his every move–electric.

Come to Bristol, England’s most underperforming soccer city (half a million people, two clubs, no titles) and tell me there’s no space for the game. No one is going to Bristol Rovers to be part of giant audience or a world shaped by tycoons and multinationals. But go they do, and to Bristol City too, teetering on the edge of the premiership and there I find a game that makes me laugh–soccer does pantomime and farce here–but surprises, thrills, and reminds me as part of a living crowd the one thing that writing a world history really drives home–”we are all just a drop in the ocean.”

Amazon.com: And lastly: who’s your favorite for Euro 2008?

Goldblatt: It feels really open–so I’m going with an outsider (like Greece at 2004)–Croatia.

Customer Review: A book which I hoped would never end but I finished far too quickly
I’ve read a lot of books about sports in my relatively short time on this planet and while I have really enjoyed many of them and reread a few multiple times, this was definitely the first sports-related book I have ever NOT wanted to finish. Based on my rating, you can tell I mean this in a completely positive way: this book was easily one of the most informative and engaging texts I have ever had the pleasure of reading. The main point of this text is the history of soccer (or football, whichever you may prefer - I’m an American, so soccer it is), which is clear from the subtitle on the cover. Yet there is so, so, so much more contained within the roughly 900 pages that span the book’s binding. You have a lot of politics, great human successes and failures, stories of survival and disaster, as well as small passages that set you in a certain time and space where Goldblatt takes you to a scene important to the chapter or section. For a well-read fan of the game, the importance of this book lies in the first half of it, as Goldblatt starts from the very beginning, discussing ball games of the ancient world, moving to the late 19th century and the creation of the English FA and the FA Cup, the development of professionalism (both accepted and hidden) versus amateurism, and while he obviously takes the history all the way to the present, the first half of the book opens up a history of the sport that many know absolutely nothing about. Soccer in the first half of the 20th century is not a well-known history, one Goldblatt marvelously elucidates. For those who like the sport but know little about it, the book shows you how much there was to soccer before the advent of the Premier League, corporate sponsorship, and 32 teams in the World Cup. Goldblatt does a tremendous job of really digging into the social and political implications and uses of the sport in various countries, from the first world to the third. Perhaps the most impressive part is that this text is all-inclusive. You don’t just get a history of European soccer with a decent bit about South America and occasional mentions or anecdotes from Africa, North America, Australia, or Asia. Goldblatt delves into every continent’s history and relationship to the game, truly showing how soccer really is the global game. All in all, this is a fantastic read and I highly recommend it to anyone.
Customer Review: The Football Bible
This is amazing, wide ranging work that tells the story of football (soccer) and places it in the social context of the times. It is a dense and scholarly work which covers a lot of world history and social class because football does not stand on it’s own as simply a game but it is much more important than life and death(to paraphrase Bill Shankly’s famous quote). Goldblatt is a very good writer who had me reaching for the Dictionary, who is able to synthesize the rich history of world football into a readable account. I appreciate the match accounts from great matches. I see this book as an companion to the excellent History of Football BBC series. The only drawback with this book is that it should have more photos

Contech Electronics Scarecrow Motion-Activated Sprinkler #CRO101/CRO102

Contech Electronics Scarecrow Motion-Activated Sprinkler #CRO101/CRO102
Finally a way to keep unwanted animals out of the garden and protect your yard, fruit trees, vegetables and flowers from hungry or destructive creatures. Cats, dogs, deer, rabbits, large birds, and many others. The patented Scarecrow motion-activated sprinkler is the smartest scarecrow ever invented. When it sees an intruder it instantly releases full garden hose water pressure towards the trespasser. The effect is both startling and immediate. Animals quickly get out of the area and avoid it in the future. The ScareCrow motion-activated sprinkler is constructed of durable, high-quality materials, and has been designed to provide many years of reliable service.

Side view of spray radius. Click to enlarge.

Top view of spray radius. Click to enlarge.

Using the ScareCrow is easy. Simply attach a standard garden hose to its base, set the ScareCrow in the ground in the area you want to protect, and then turn on the water. Once you switch the unit on, it is ready to go.

How does it work?
The ScareCrow uses a combination of sudden noise, unexpected movement, and a startling blast of water to create a memorable and unpleasant experience for the trespasser.
The animal immediately associates this unpleasant experience with the location, and to avoid similar surprises, learns to avoid the area. If an animal chooses to return, the ScareCrow will be waiting.
While a human may flee several steps after activating a ScareCrow, animals are typically affected to a much greater degree. In most cases they run much farther, and stay away longer. Because the unit only triggers when the animal moves, its behavior is difficult for animals to anticipate, making it a very effective deterrent.

Customer Review: Works great!!!
We purchased the scarecrow to stop the Blue Heron’s from eating our Koi fish in our pond. We tried an owl, plastic heron (moved to different locations frequently) and nothing worked. UNTILL—we purchased the scarecrow. It has been great and no fish missing. I must say my grand-kids also love it to run through and make it squirt them. Teriffic product.

Customer Review: It worked on me!!!
I use three Sarecrows to protect my garden. One morning I forgot to turn off the water. The blast from one of the “crows’ caused me to drop everything i was carrying and scamper out of the garden. it startled the tar out of me!

Only negative so far is battery life is about 1 month. I am now trying rechargeable batteries.

Customer Review: Does not work on Vista AND zero customer support.
DOES NOT WORK ON VISTA EVEN THOUGH STICKER ON BOX CLAIMS IT DOES. I’ll preface my comments noting I’ve been in the software business for over 25 years, so suffice it to say I’m not a novice when it comes to computers. I purchased this for 2 of my kids. Seemed like the perfect item for them to hone up on their math skills, especially given both have an affinity for soccer. I loaded it up on a new Vista laptop and it simply does not run properly - and what little can be played has error messages popping up left and right. Vista of course is not without its fair share of problems to say the least, but this is not a review of Vista. In fact, this is hardly a review of Soccer Math, since we really never got it to work. This is a review of the company, edVentures, who made it. After three times over 6 months trying to contact their so called “customer support” there was zero response. Zero as in zip, nada. We gave up. When a company has no support for its customers and can’t even give them the time of day, it does not deserve any customers. Over time people find out and stay away. STAY AWAY!

Dremel 761-03 7,000/14,000 RPM Cordless Pet Nail Grooming Rotary Tool

Dremel 761-03 7,000/14,000 RPM Cordless Pet Nail Grooming Rotary Tool
It’s a rare human who actually enjoys clipping a dog’s nails; and rarer still, the dog who enjoys it. Enter Dremel’s cordless groomer, a quiet, battery-powered rotary tool that gently grinds down your pet’s nails without cutting.

We happen to know a particular hound named Sophie who’s endured more than her share of cracked nails and bleeding nail beds, the result of the standard guillotine-type nail trimmers. Though she was a bit wary of the Dremel, she sniffed at it and decided it was harmless. Then we set it on the floor and turned it on.

Sophie seemed concerned for a minute, but then lost interest. We let her get used to the sound of the Dremel for a few minutes, then got down to business. We expected her to cringe and pull away when we took paw in hand, for what usually follows is not pleasant for her. She submitted reluctantly at first to the Dremel, probably expecting the worst, but once we distracted her with a piece of rawhide, she forgot about the nail hubbub and let us carry on.

The whole thing was quick and painless, which made a change for Sophie, and was actually kind of soothing for the humans, which definitely made a change for us.

We followed the advice in the manual and alternated between two paws at a time, not keeping the abrasive on any nail for more than a couple of seconds, and we made sure each nail was cool before grinding it a second time.

If we had a criticism, it would be to wish only that Dremel would include the ?-inch drum for larger dogs like Sophie as well as the smaller one. Other than that, it’s a tail-wagger. –Kris Jensen-Van Heste

Customer Review: Dremmel Pet Groomer
First of all, using the Dremmel Pet Grooming tool is a lot less stress on me. I always have the fear of clipping into the quick while using clippers. Overall the tool is fast and painless. The only obstical to overcome is getting my dog to sit still when the motor starts.

Customer Review: A great tool for the price
I’ve used this twice, and really, for the price, it’s a nifty little tool. I had originally looked at the peticure, but read reviews about the battery not lasting long, plus it costs twice as much. Thought I’d try this and it works great-especially if using rechargeable batteries. I know I didn’t want a cord, and the batteries in a rechargeable unit will eventually wear out. This is great-if it runs down, you can pop in charged batteries and it keeps going.

I’m sure you can pay twice as much and get a better unit, but at least for me and my little chihuahua/terrier, this one does the job.

The Abstinence Teacher

Stonewood Heights is the perfect place to raise kids. It’s got the proverbial good schools, solid values and a healthy real estate market. It’s the kind of place where parents are involved in their children’s lives, where no opportunity for enrichment goes unexplored.

Ruth Ramsey is the human sexuality teacher at the local high school. She believes that “pleasure is good, shame is bad, and knowledge is power.” Ruth’s younger daughter’s soccer coach is Tim Mason, a former stoner and rocker whose response to hitting rock bottom was to reach out and be saved. Tim belongs to The Tabernacle, an evangelical Christian church that doesn’t approve of Ruth’s style of teaching. And Ruth in turn doesn’t applaud The Tabernacle’s mission to take its message outside its doors. Adversaries in a small-town culture war, Ruth and Tim instinctively mistrust each other. But when a controversy on the soccer field pushes the two of them to actually talk to each other, they are forced to take each other at something other than face value.

The Abstinence Teacher exposes the powerful emotions that run beneath the surface of modern American family life and explores the complex spiritual and sexual lives of ordinary people. Elegantly written, it is characterized by the distinctive mix of satire and compassion that have animated Perrotta’s previous novels.

Customer Review: Good for a long weekend at home
This book was recommended and given to me by a fellow teacher at work. She raved about it and went on and on about how great it was and how it only took her about a day or two to read it. I did not find it as engaging as my co-worker, but I was pleasantly surprised by this book. All of the characters were interesting and well-developed. You see them grow and change throughout the book. I must admit, the book was much more interesting to me when told from Tim’s point of view. While none of the characters were really likeable to me, I found myself being drawn in and wanting to know what happens next. There were times when I could not wait to get back to this book to see what happens next and other times when I thought of skipping ahead to get around slow, dull moments. The ending leaves you hanging a bit. I am one of those readers who likes my stories tied up neatly at the end. An epilogue would have been wonderful and made the book more enjoyable for me.
Customer Review: Abstain with me.
This is the latest book by the bestselling author of Little Children. It tells the story of Ruth Ramsey, a divorced sexual education teacher who lives in suburban New Jersey and comes into conflict with the town’s conservative population. They force her to teach an abstinence based sex-ed class, hence the title of the book. The other main character is Tim, a born again Christian who is a recovering drug addict. Tim coaches Ruth’s daughter’s soccer team and he runs into a conflict with Ruth when he leads the team in a prayer. I don’t want to give away too much of the plot, because you really should find out what happens while you read it. Suffice to say that this is another one of Tom Perrotta’s ruefully funny dark comedies.

Maybe this new start in Tangerine will help Paul finally see the truth about his past–and will give him the courage to face up to his terrifying older brother.

Customer Review: Tangerine
What a page turner! This engaging book is about a boy who has just moved to a new area, Tangerine County, Florida, with his family. He is a young man who is constantly outdone by his older star-football-player brother and is stuggling to find his place in life, in Tangerine county, and in his family. This book captures you into his world, taking you through the ups and down of the self-awarness and moral issues of middle school. This young man must ultimitly chose to do the right thing or to do what is expected of him. It deals with a question that every young person is asked, “What do you want to be?” Relativly short and an easier read than some, this book is a good read for most middle schoolers and young adults alike. It is well written and engaging with many twists and turns (especialy the ending!!!).
Customer Review: A real page-turner - Wow!
Through his computerized diary entries, Paul Fisher tells the story of his seventh-grade year. These entries not only let him describe what is happening, they give him the opportunity to reflect on his past. At the beginning of the story, the Fisher family has just moved to Florida from Houston. The diary entries tell the story of how Paul’s brother, Erik, has always bullied him. He even has his friends call Paul Eclipse boy because of a bad vision problem that was supposedly caused by Paul looking at an eclipse for too long. His parents virtually overlook Erik’s digressions because they are focused on what Paul calls the ‘Erik Fisher football dream.’ To make things worse, Paul gets kicked off of his new soccer team because his Mom had told the school that he has a visual ‘handicap’. But Paul believes that his vision is much better and it is proven in his many observations chronicled in the diary. When the portable school units had Paul’s middle school are swallowed by a sinkhole, Paul is given a chance to go to another school and he takes it. Because he knows that at Tangerine Middle School he can play soccer. Paul’s ability to ’see’ people for who they are may be even more sharp than his ability to see. He doesn’t see the class or racial barriers that separate him from the kids in this other school. His eagerness to play also earns him the respect of the other team members. As the story unfolds, Paul sees snippets of his past and the history of his family comes clear to him. And he is the unlikely hero in this heartwarming tale. Paul was endearing from the start. The writing in this novel is impeccable. The story is fantastic - a real page-turner. I read it all through in a day. There is a dark undertone to this book though so I would not recommend it for younger kids.

Customer Review: Wow is this fast
Thrilled with this card. It’s faster than I had imagined. An formatting a full card happens in seconds. That might be in part due to the camera I am using with (Alpha 200) but I am as pleased as can be with the performance. I will be purchasing a backup for sure.
