Best of Both Worlds Concert: The 3-D Movie
The Hannah Montana & Miley Cyrus: Best of Both Worlds live concert was a sold-out sensation everywhere it played, and this concert video is the next best thing to being there for all the fans that couldn’t get tickets to attend the concert in person. The movie opens with Miley Cyrus backstage in make-up and hair, warming up with vocal exercises, then cuts to Hannah Montana (her alter ego)’s performance of “Rock Star,” and then back in time to four weeks before her performance when concert rehearsals were just beginning. It runs like a backstage special feature for a while, following Hannah Montana through coaching, choreography scenes with Kenny Ortega, and rehearsal sessions. Then it’s back to concert footage from opening night in St. Louis and all along the tour, seasoned here and there with some fun looks at the concerts’ special effects, quick costume changes, other logistical challenges (Hannah gets dropped during a routine early in the tour), and lots of shots of the enthusiastic, mostly female ‘tween audiences. The 3D format gives the audience a nice sense of being there and includes some effective, if somewhat overused shots of the crowd waving, Hannah/Miley reaching out to the audience, and fun stunts like the drummer’s twirling stick thrown high in the air and the guitar player’s pick being tossed out into the audience. The sound is adequate, but fails to replicate the live concert experience (the plus side is that the audience’s ears won’t be ringing for hours after the performance). Hannah Montana’s performance includes “Rock Star,” “Life’s What You Make It,” “Just Like You,” “Nobody’s Perfect,” and “We Got the Party.” The Jonas Brothers perform “When You Look Me In the Eyes” and “Year 3000,” and then Miley hits the stage with “Start All Over,” “I Got Nerve,” “I Miss You” (which Miley wrote in honor of her Granddad’s passing), “Going Away,” “GNO: Girl’s Night Out,” and “The Best of Both Worlds.” This 3D concert presentation truly is the “best of both worlds,” a 3D concert experience with easy availability and minimal expense. Customer Review: The Just-As-Useful Review of a “Minority”
As a 16 year old male, I recieved far more than several strange looks upon entering the theatre to see this movie. There was one girl in particular who sat in front of me and managed to turn around and look at me with a rather pathetic lack of comprehension somewhere between 10 to 20 times before the movie started. I could just see in her eyes that she, like many of the other close-minded immature tweens whom surrounded me, was thoroughly considering either my sanity or my sexual orientation. It really is incredibly unsettling that our society is as bigoted and incapable as it is. Target demographic, shmarget demographic; Miley/Hannah’s music is incredibly entertaining, well composed, and, at times, moving, regardless of age or gender.

BUT anyway, on with the review…

Miley’s voice is amazing. It’s even better live than on her CD’s, and this film presents absolutely no exception. Her control and range are darn impressive, while at the same time her voice maintains an innocence and untapped potential that makes it satisfyingly difficult to stop listenting to her. I have to say that I love the unique controlled vocal crack that seems to be her signature during extended segments of vocal influctuation. She’s also absolutely fearless; how many 15 year olds could keep their composure in front of 15,000+ people nearly every night with the comfort and facility that she does?

And on top off all her talent, she is, to put it incredibly frankly, pretty darn hott.

The instrumentation throughout the concert was superb. Her lead guitarist and drummer especially were outstanding in my opinion. One thing that I love about concert experiences is that the music itself is always far better than it is on the recording, since record companies and such can’t put restrictions on spantaneous improvisations by the musicians. It was also a treat to listen to Miley play an acoustic guitar during “I Miss You.”

Perhaps the best part of the film was the 3D effect. The glasses, thank God, weren’t the blue and red sort that leave your color perception ruined and your head aching for hours, but were much better quality plastic ones.

I happen to be an aspiring filmmaker, so coming from a cinematographic point of view, this movie left nothing to be desired. Sweeping camera shots, pleasantly unexpected close ups, and creatively fun visual tricks in post production made the absolute best use of the 3D effect possible. At one point during viewing, I almost subconsciously convinced myself that I actually WAS right there, front row at her performance. You literally feel like you could reach out and touch her at any time.

The vibrant use/balance of color was in no way distorted by the glasses [if anything, the 3D effect enhanced them] and the very well designed stage setup and enormous venue could’ve made even the smallest theatre seem wonderfully spacious.

One of my personal favorite moments of the experience was the period of time in which the incomparable Jonas Brothers played a few songs while Miley changed. Their dramatic music, rich instrumentation, and dependably deep and passionate performances/vocals alone were worth the $15, and one can only hope that they will release a filmed concert as well… Haha, but I digress.

My only complaint would have to be that the entire concert is not included. There were numerous songs that I was looking forward to, but that didn’t make it past the cutting room floor. I suppose they had to pick and choose between performances though since they had to fit behind-the-scenes action as well.

All in all, this movie is incontrovertably entertaining and simply bursting with refreshing talent. People can tell me I’m “not supposed” to enjoy what Miley has to offer all they want, but the fact of the matter is that she is a quality entertainer and to refuse fandom based merely on social expectation is ridiculous and pathetic. I cannot wait until this DVD comes out, and you can bet that it’ll be in my DVD player before the day it becomes available is through.

Customer Review: Not Preachy, Not Technical, Just a Good Earthy Story
This book introduced me to Barbara Kingsolver. I liked her writing style so much I went on to read many of her other writings which I also enjoyed.

This book is the story of her family’s journey from a rather typical American lifestyle to something far more fulfilling, rewarding, interesting and sustainable. I feared it might be a bit preachy, but I didn’t find it to be at all. I found it to be earthy, hearty, informative but not technical, funny (I laughed out loud on several occasions) and yet it had an air of class and charm all at once. It is definitely a “green” book with an underlying sense of urgency, but it was refreshingly subtle compared to similar books I’ve read. Rather than being filled with “You must all do ___ or the world is going to end!” it was more about “We decided to do ___ for ourselves as a family. It makes sense to us, it feels right and it works very well.”

Sometimes I felt like I was on the farm with her, learning for the first time how to coax my own food from the earth and changing at a fundamental level how I contribute my energy, my money, my life to this country I love so much. She seems always to contemplate how her decisions will affect the world around her and act accordingly, and has created a beautiful and bountiful life around that. Go Barbara. I admire you and the life you’ve created.

Customer Review: Inspiring! I can’t move to a farm, but I can support my local farmers.
Barbara Kingsolver and her family relocated to a homestead in southern Appalachia and resolved to spend a year eating home-grown or locally produced food. What they didn’t raise or grow themselves, they bought from local farms.

Kingsolver demonstrates the benefits of sustainable agriculture without coming across as preachy or overly judgemental. I loved the way, with humor and grace, she shows how anyone can add a little local flavor into their diets.

My mom is an avid gardener and a great cook, but I, unfortunately, inherited neither the talent nor the interest to follow in her muddy footsteps. Kingsolver’s wonderful narrative has inspired me to, at the very least, support my local farmer’s market. Perhaps, I might even attempt a small kitchen garden this year.

Like many blues musicians, Willie Dixon had an interesting background. He was born, and spent his childhood, here in Vicksburg. He never had formal music education, but a local carpenter taught him harmony singing. Dixon sang bass in a local gospel quartet. Along the way, he served a couple stretches on Mississippi prison farms. He started his career as a heavyweight boxer in Chicago, but switched to music and played bass, part of the time as a house musician. Dixon started out as a studio bass player with Chess Records when it was a fledgling company started by the Chess brothers. The present set includes 36 songs written by Dixon, and performed by a variety of artists in addition to Dixon including Muddy Waters (Hoochie Coochie Man, etc.), Howlin Wolf (I Ain’t Superstitious, etc.), Bo Diddley (Pretty Thing, and You Can’t Tell a Book by its Cover), Koko Taylor (Wang Dang Doodle) and many others. The boxed set is a must addition for your collection if you have a serious interest in blues. It also makes a good gift. This set was my introduction to the *real* blues, and to not only Willie Dixon, but Muddy Waters and others featured in the set. Customer Review: Fascinating book
I’m a teacher and have recently become interested in the brain. This book is GREAT for educators. It will make you rethink the way you teach. It made me realize how important some parts of the curriculum are (P.E.) which are often cut in order to make more room for review time. With all the non-sense high stakes tests of NCLB it’s not surprising (I did it myself) but if you want to boost your test scores, DON’T CUT P.E. I love this book and would recommend it to anybody, but especially teachers.

Works fine and is quite durable. My only regret is that I should have bought a digital instead. The flags don’t drop on the minute, instead they just kind of hang up for anywhere from 15-45 seconds after the time is up.
Customer Review: An adequate timer, leaves a little to be desired
This is an adequate timer, and it does its job. There were just a few things which I found disappointing. First of all, it is larger than I was expecting: 4 inches by 7 inches by 2 inches. Second, the sound made when pressing the buttons to switch the timers is not very pleasant; it is a pretty loud and plastic-sounding snap. Thirdly, if you press the buttons halfway down, instead of causing both clocks to stop (which is useful for rules challenges, for example), it causes both clocks to run — not very useful! You have to flip the power switch on the back off to stop both clocks. That being said, it is a reasonable clock for amateur use, and the seller was great: very prompt shipment (I placed my order on Sunday and received the product on Wednesday), and they even threw in a battery for free.

agathis wood may not be quite as durable with kaya, but Ive had no problem with any chipping or denting. and I play as much as I possibly can.

The stones never seem to get dirty, to my surprise. as opposed to my marble stones which I need to wash every week atleast.

The bowls are good as well though Im not sure how to stress how good bowls can be.

I recalculated the result of the expected number of pips you move on a throw of the dice, and my apologies, John Leet is 100% correct. It is 8 + 1/6. I was in gross error. I stopped reading the book because I disagreed with the calculation, and didn’t want to read the rest of it. But it turns out to be quite a decent book. This is a good all-purpose introduction to Backgammon strategy. Previous reviewer is confusing craps and backgammon when he criticizes the math. If you reread section 3-19 of this book, the author is calculating the average number of “pips” you move on any given roll. He didn’t accidentally count the double rolls twice; he counted the number of pips you move on a double roll twice, which is correct. 4-4 may be “eight the hard way” in craps, but in backgammon, you get to move 16 pips. The odds of rolling a 16 in craps is 0/36, while it’s 1/36 in backgammon. If you count up the number of pips you move on each of the 36 rolls instead of just the craps-style dice total for all 36 rolls, you will find out that the average in this book is correct: 294/36 = 8.1666…

the pool is very large for the price. it is one to have up for an extended period of time because it takes a while to fill and can be tricky.

Those filtered pools are quite expensive for a “throwaway” pool, they kill the lawn, the inflatable top rings can be destroyed easily, and I prefer not to have my kids gulping, breathing, and soaking in chlorine all day. That, and they still are hard to keep clean–the filters clog readily and don’t work well, especially for sediment on the bottom.

Use a footbath with any pool. The snapsets are easy to skim–just squash down one side and let the water spill over the edge. As long as the sides aren’t sharply folded (which causes cracking–always fold the sides in from the vinyl floor!), and rocks and other sharp objects are forbidden, they last at least all summer.

It does take a few bodies to put a large snapset up, but even a toddler can help hold up a side while it fills. If you absolutely must go it alone, carefully-placed buckets or lawn chairs can do the job nicely. You must have level ground, as with any pool–but these are fairly forgiving of irregularities.

Yes, you do use up water with these, as it goes slimy after a few days. But by then, it’s time to give the lawn a break–and it gets a good watering at the same time. A review By Kayla Barry, a high school student, struggles between friends and playing soccer. Sturbridge is where he lives and their soccer team has a chance at winning league this year. His best friend Joey, one of the best soccer players on the team, has trouble-staying friends because of their soccer playing. Joey is a ball hog and doesn’t pass. Joey thinks that Barry (Bones) and the team aren’t playing there hardest. Joey and Bones also have trouble with girls because they both like the same girl and they both get with her. Bones has to deal with pressure from his mom, the soccer team, and Joey. This story is real easy to read. The words aren’t hard and the book just flows through the story. The soccer screens are great. They really tell you what is happening and you can picture it in your head. It talks about stuff that real teens would do like have a party the weekend your parents go away and the jealousy between friends. It shows a great struggle between two friends that are trying to stay great friends. It even shows them getting so mad at each other that they start fighting. It shows problems in the soccer team, some wanting it really bad and others out there just to play. The parts I didn’t like is after some chapters it had some inside opinions, poem like things, I didn’t get them or like them. They confused me. I didn’t know who wrote them and why there were writing them. I really enjoyed this book. I would recommend this book to whoever liked soccer and enjoyed reading great soccer screens. Also to people who liked reading about friends and their friendship, it has a good story between Joey and Bones. Shots on Goal is a fun and easy book to read.
Customer Review: A journey through adolecence and sports
I thought this book was a good sports book but it wasn’t spectacular. The characters are interesting and I enjoyed reading it. In this book Dusty; the main character, and his friend Joey are the backbone of the first strong soccer team their school has ever known. However after Joey starts going out with the girl that Dusty was after they become angry and start losing soccer games. I thought this was an interesting book and it talked about good issues like relationships and friendships.

Customer Review: Dentist recommended
Years ago my dentist recommended we get a Sonicare and we did and I was immediately impressed with the difference. These replacement brushes fit our unit perfectly and my only complaint is after every use you have to take off the plastic screw piece or mold will start growing due to the trapped water underneath. The brushes last approx. 6 months before obviously needing to be replaced (bristles start to splay out) and the subscription program is great as I don’t need to remember to order them they just arrive at my door! We purchased the smaller head ones for our toddlers who love using “mommy and daddy’s toothbrush!”

Customer Review: Terrific gift!
I got the DVD as a gift and I loved it. Fans of MLS rarely get to see highlight clips from their own league’s history. For those who have forgotten, it turns out there are plenty of moments that will amaze you. Getting to see old players and old plays and relive some of those moments that had you jumping up or dropping your jaw or pumping your fist was a real kick. The music and production values remind me a bit of skateboarding videos. Other, more established leagues like the NFL or Major League Baseball like to go with music that is stately and even august - themes of “pride and glory.” True, what you get here is not that. But MLS is a young league and not everyone viewed it as a quality league as it grew. So using music and the propulsive way of editing the DVD has to emphasize how exciting MLS can be was, in my opinion, a good choice.
Customer Review: One word - mediocre production
As a big fan of the Chicago Fire and MLS, I enjoyed the DVD, but it’s evident that the production is not of the best quality. The background music kinda stinks also. I don’t regret buying it, but I hope that they improve the quality of these DVD’s MLS puts out.

Great product, arrived promptly. Very durable, but make certain there are no sticks/rocks/debris under slide because they will tear the plastic. Be careful where you “aim” the slide - children, especially small ones, can get a lot of distance if the slide is placed on a slight hill, so check for clearance at the end of the slide as well as debris they could run in to.

Customer Review: Fun with friends
This toy is convenient if you have more than one child who wants to ride the toy. The side by side design encourages everything from racing to just plain tandem sliding. It is a little weird to have the hose running under the end ‘pool’ area, but that has not yet caused any problems. I reccommend this to anyone who has more than one child who would want to play. One comment: we have a well with lower water pressure than our city system counterparts. The area we have to set up this toy is a good 50ft from our faucet; this results in a declining spray from the hose connection point to the end of the slide. It does not prevent the fun, but the kids did notice that the “front” of the slide didn’t have as high of a water spray.

This toy is kind of fun for kids to see the rockets shoot up in the air, particularly in an open space. But on the first day that my son played with it inside the house, he dropped it on our tile floor and one of the launcher on the pump rocket broke off. We have not been able to fix it.

This rocket launcher is not bad, you are meant to load 4 rockets on and shoot them one at a time by turning the barrel, but sometimes more than one goes, or one gets stuck due to a tight fit. They recommend corn flour for sticky rockets, but heck it is a toy, I just want it to work. Overall not bad for the money, a little hard for a smaller kid to really get a good launch on (maybe 6 and under)
